Therapists and tech: A new treatment plan for Wisconsin

From couch to community: Expanding the therapeutic reach

How is Cheers to Smart! collaborating with therapists? We are developing a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform where Cheers to Smart! shares real-time drinking behavior trends, and therapists provide anonymized treatment insights. This collaboration aims to create more effective, data-driven interventions for alcohol-related issues.

What’s next in our mental health support initiatives? We’re exploring AI-assisted therapy tools, developed with therapists, to offer customized support tailored to each client’s unique needs between sessions. While still in early stages, we believe this could significantly expand access to personalized mental health resources for those addressing their relationship with alcohol.

How can therapists get involved? We welcome therapists interested in shaping innovative approaches to alcohol-related mental health support.

Envisioning collaborative workshops and faith-informed resources, we respect diverse beliefs while tackling alcohol issues. Your insights are crucial. NA DRINK MENUS

Present Alcohol Free Social Alternatives

All establishments holding liquor licenses would be legally required to offer and prominently display mocktails and non-alcoholic drink alternatives. The selection of non-alcoholic (NA) drinks must constitute a minimum of 20% of the total beverage inventory, to be implemented gradually over a defined period.

Key Components:

  1. Tiered Implementation: The requirement will be introduced progressively, starting with a lower percentage and increasing to 20% over time, allowing businesses to adapt.
  2. Quality and Variety: Establishments must meet specific guidelines ensuring the quality, taste, and variety of NA options, including seasonal specials to maintain customer interest.
  3. Staff Training: Mandatory training for bar staff on preparing, presenting, and promoting NA drinks will be required.
  4. Competitive Pricing: NA drinks should be priced attractively to encourage their selection, with potential tax incentives for compliant businesses.
  5. Visual Appeal: Guidelines will be provided for creative presentation methods to make NA drinks visually appealing and comparable to alcoholic counterparts.
  6. Local Partnerships: Establishments will be encouraged to collaborate with local NA beverage producers, supporting community businesses.
  7. Customer Feedback: A standardized system for patrons to rate and suggest NA options will be implemented, ensuring continuous improvement.
  8. Health Information: Calorie and ingredient information for NA drinks will be required, appealing to health-conscious consumers.
  9. Recognition Program: An incentive system will be developed to recognize and reward establishments exceeding the minimum requirements or showing innovation in their NA offerings.
  10. Monitoring and Support: A fair and efficient monitoring system will be established, along with resources to help establishments develop appealing NA menus.

A NEW LAST-CALL

Last call for alcohol 1 hour before closing

Strengths:

  1. Promotes safer driving by allowing time for alcohol metabolism
  2. Encourages responsible drinking habits
  3. Maintains socializing opportunities while reducing risks
  4. Offers NA alternatives like mocktails and coffee

Potential Enhancements:

  1. Gradual Wind-Down: Implement a tiered system where drink strength decreases over the final hours.
  2. Mocktail Hour: Introduce exciting non-alcoholic options during the final hour to maintain the social atmosphere.
  3. Games and Entertainment: Offer engaging activities during the last hour to shift focus from drinking.
  4. Loyalty Program: Reward patrons who consistently choose responsible options (e.g., designated drivers, those who switch to non-alcoholic drinks early).
  5. Smart Tracking: Partner with apps that help individuals monitor their alcohol consumption throughout the night.
  6. Education Component: Use the last hour for brief, engaging alcohol awareness messages or trivia.
  7. Food Service: Encourage establishments to offer discounted snacks during the final hour to aid in alcohol absorption.
  8. Breathalyzer Stations: Provide voluntary, anonymous BAC testing to raise awareness of impairment levels.
  9. Community Partnerships: Collaborate with local businesses for safe ride promotions or morning-after discounts on hangover remedies.

Implementation Considerations:

  • Ensure staff are trained to handle potential pushback from patrons
  • Develop clear signage and communication about the policy
  • Work with local authorities to potentially incentivize businesses that adopt this practice
  • Consider the economic impact on establishments and explore ways to offset potential losses

STAY PUT ZONES

Think you may have over consumed? Safe areas to remain in a secured parked car

STAY PUT ZONES are designated areas where individuals can legally remain in a parked car if they don’t feel well enough to drive. These zones embody the principle that not driving is a form of responsibility, providing a safe alternative when needed.

All establishments that sell alcohol are automatically designated as STAY PUT ZONES. These zones may also include specific parking lots or safe street areas.

To increase visibility and usage, STAY PUT ZONES will be clearly marked with distinctive signage. A comprehensive public awareness campaign will educate the community about these zones and their purpose, emphasizing that choosing not to drive when impaired is a responsible decision. To encourage participation, businesses that actively promote and maintain STAY PUT ZONES may be eligible for incentives.

For easy access, the locations of STAY PUT ZONES will be integrated into popular smartphone apps, allowing users to quickly find the nearest safe parking area when needed.

Law enforcement is authorized to administer BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) tests to individuals stationary in a STAY PUT ZONE. Based on the results, they may restrict driving for a specified period, reinforcing the importance of staying put and responsible decision-making.

BAC ROAD SIGNS

.08 BAC limit signs posted on highways and in community hot-spot areas

Concept: BAC limit signs, similar to speed limit signs, would serve as constant reminders of drinking and driving laws in key areas. Cheers to Smart! advocates that implementing these signs should be a state responsibility, aligning with their existing roles in alcohol regulation, DUI enforcement, and road safety management.

Given the state’s authority in alcohol taxation and DUI law enforcement, BAC road signs are a natural extension of their public safety duties. This initiative would demonstrate a balanced approach to alcohol-related safety, combining prevention with existing enforcement measures.

A collaborative PSA campaign between state agencies and organizations like Cheers to Smart should accompany the signs’ introduction, maximizing their impact on public awareness and behavior.

DISCRETE PUBLIC BAC TESTERS

Wall-mounted BAC testers installed in restrooms

Are you or a bartender curious about your blood alcohol level? Hygiene-safe, free public BAC testers are discreetly available in restrooms. Test results can be sent as a text message to your phone, along with personalized suggestions for managing your night. Recommendations are tailored based on your age, weight, and even distance from home (via optional GPS data), helping you make informed decisions about your alcohol consumption.
